Botvin Life Skills Training
Botvin Life Skills Training (LST) is a research-validated substance abuse prevention program proven to reduce the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug use, and violence by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors. This comprehensive and exciting program provides youth with the confidence and skills necessary to successfully handle challenging situations.
Rather than merely teaching information about the dangers of drug use, Life Skills Training promotes healthy alternatives to risky behavior through activities designed to:
- Teach youth the necessary skills to resist social (peer) pressure to smoke, drink, and use drugs
- Help youth to develop greater self-esteem and self-confidence
- Enable youth to effectively cope with anxiety
- Increase knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance abuse
- Enhance cognitive and behavioral competency to reduce and prevent a variety of health risk behaviors
Life Skills Training consists of three major components: drug resistance skills, personal self-management skills, and general social skills. Research has shown that youth who develop skills in these three domains are far less likely to engage in a wide range of high-risk behaviors.
Topics covered include: self-image and self-improvement, making decisions, myths and realities of smoking, alcohol, and marijuana, advertising, coping with anger and anxiety, communication skills, assertiveness, resolving conflicts, etc.
Target Population: 5th – 8th Grade Youth
Program Length: 10-15 Classroom Sessions
