Promoting First Relationships
Promoting First Relationships is a program for expectant parents and those with very young children. Parents learn specific strategies to nurture the social and emotional development of young children, laying the groundwork for healthy relationships throughout life.
Research shows that a child’s social and emotional health is achieved through a positive, nurturing relationship with the caregiver. This foundation of trust affects how the child thinks/feels about self and others. It also is the basis of how a child begins to manage emotions. Education, discussion and support are provided around the following topics:
- The importance of social and emotional health
- Elements of a healthy relationship
- Attachment and bonding
- Understanding a baby’s body language (cues) as communication
- Child development
- Managing upset feelings (child and parent/caregiver)
- The importance of routines and rituals
- Discipline and understanding the child’s behavior
Targeted Population: Expectant parents Parents/Guardians of children (ages 0 – 2 years)
Program Length: 10 sessions, once per week
